John Counsell

BSc B.Arch MSc Architect RIBA

Head of the Department of Architectural Studies

Principal Lecturer

Tel: 02920 201556

Email: jcounsell@uwic.ac.uk

John is a chartered architect with over 35 years of professional and academic experience in the subject of architecture and architectural technology. After graduating with a BSc in Architectural Studies in 1971 from the Welsh School of Architecture, then in the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, he completed a Bachelor of Architecture in 1973, and became a registered architect in 1975. John began employment in 1973 in Somerset County Council, initially working on Schools, Hostels and similar buildings, and specialising to some extent in Fire Stations, while also undertaking a private practice in building refurbishment and conservation. He later moved into Conservation work in the Planning Department. An overland tour led to a post in a middle eastern oil company, leading a team on refinery buildings, such as the new training centre, and the company township. His MSc in 1985 was focused on computer aided building design. This then led to work in this specialism for prestigious London practices such as Arup Associates and Building Design Partnership, followed by a move back to general practice in Bristol. In 1989 John set up a rural architectural practice in Wells in Somerset, together with a consultancy in CAD, that later led to four years of consultancy with Westbury Homes leading development of their systems.

John entered higher education in 1990 lecturing part time in Construction in Bristol Polytechnic. He later migrated from general practice into what had then become the University of the West of England, moving towards full time teaching mixed with research over the period between 1994 and 1997. He helped establish the Architectural Technology and Design award, and taught design, CAD, and even business planning, to a wide range of students from many disciplines, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He worked on several major European funded research projects, on consultancy projects such as the 3D modelling of contexts to examine proposals for change on sites like the Tower of London and the Bristol Millenium proposals, and on educational research projects.

John was appointed to UWIC in 2008 and shortly after became Head of Department.

David Jones

Technician Demonstrator

BSc (Hons) Architectural Design and Technology

David Jones

Hi, my name is Dave and I am the programme's Technician Demonstrator. I actually graduated the Architectural Design and Technology course in 2005, qualifying as an Architectural Technologist to degree level. The following 3 years saw me gain valuable experience working in a Mid-Wales architectural practice working on a variety of projects before joining UWIC in April 2008 to work in my current capacity. I believe the fact I've studied the course (and still came back!) gives me an excellent starting point whenever giving advice to current students. I've been there, I've done it and enjoyed it!

My role includes the teaching of all software packages, drawing techniques and surveying along with assisting students with all their project work and other other issues they may have throughout the duration of their study.

I enjoy the outdoors and try to be as active as possible but still spend far too much time in front of the TV! I enjoy all manner of sports, usually in seasonal cycles like football, tennis and golf and enjoy doing the odd pub quiz and generally going out and socializing! I have a passion for all things car related and spend far too much time and money on my own mode of transport but it keeps me busy! I believe NOW is our time as designers to make a difference. We have a chance to be at the forefront of cutting-edge sustainable building design and that can make for a very interesting, fulfilling and rewarding career within the built environment.

Charlie Bull

Technician Demonstrator

Tel: 029 20 416677

Charlie BullCharlie graduated from the Welsh School of Architecture in 2003 and joined UWIC the same year, initially as a technician with Architectural Design and Technology. She joined Interior Architecture, as technician demonstrator, in January 2008.

Her main role is the teaching of all the CAD and graphics software used by the course, but she is also involved with teaching drawing and will happily offer up advice on design and other project work. She is particularly interested in the creative application of CAD software, encouraging students to experiment with different approaches to the presentation of their designs, combining manual and digital techniques in order to develop individual and unique styles. She loves working with the course and is constantly impressed by her students.

Charlie is originally from Wolverhampton but has adopted Cardiff as her new home. She lives near the city centre with her pet chickens, and loves baking, cycling and live music.
