Staff profiles

Jay Young
Programme Director
Jay Young is one of the best known authors/designers of children’s non-fiction in the UK.
An expert in innovative book design he is credited with over a dozen titles for which he has received amongst other awards The Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year and Children’s Science Book of the Year.
Published in more than 15 languages and selling in excess of two million copies he has made numerous television and radio appearances. Jay runs his own Cardiff based design practice.
Sally Grant
Programme Director
Sally Grant studied Textiles/Fashion at Winchester School of Art and the London College of Fashion and has recently completed an MA at UWN where she is continuing her research in Smart Clothing and Wearable Technology.
After graduation Sally worked for the Fashion designer Issey Miyake International for a number of years, as well as Nigel Atkinson Textiles, and Warehouse as a Print designer.
She has worked in Arts administration and after an Internship at the ICA in the Visual Arts Department worked in the Tate Liverpool.
Sally is a practicing Textile artist and currently has work in The Cardiff Design Festival and in the Musee de Mode in Ontario and Quebec in Canada. She is a member of MaP.
Richard Waring
Over the past decade Richard has led Foundation courses at 4 different Institutions, last year gaining an OFSTED grade one for his Foundation Programme. Richard is also a painter and photographer and has exhibited his work widely in the UK and his work has also been featured in several leading art magazines. He became well known for his work in exhibition organisation, having worked for the Blue Note and ICA galleries in London. Among the exhibitions were those for well known contemporary artists including Tracey Emin and many other of the ‘Young British Artists’.
He has a Masters Degree in Fine Art gained from Chelsea School of Art, London and is currently working on a Phd at Cardiff School of Art.
Tim Forrester
Tim Forrester is one of Britain's most innovative furniture designers. He achieved great success during a substantial period spent working in Milan & returned to the UK to continue designing & manufacturing his high quality, inspirational and versatile furniture ranges.
Tim's work is regularly featured in leading design publications worldwide and has continued to exhibit internationally at the likes of Salone del Mobile and Euroluce in Milan.
October 2008 saw his Cube & Hex ranges shortlisted for the Cardiff Design Festival Awards, whereas in June 2007 his Brush Strokes coat/ bag ‘peg’ was short-listed for Product of the Year. In December 2005 his Luna furniture range was runner up in the BIDA Awards 2005 for Furniture Product of the Year.

Bill Chambers
Bill Chambers graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 1992 and a Masters Degree in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art a year later. Since then he has lived in Cardiff where he is a member of Old Library Artists Ltd, an artists’ studio co-operative. In 2002 he completed his PGCE year in secondary education and has since worked as a printmaking technical demonstrator for the Foundation course at UWIC.
Bill is an artist printmaker with strong links to Swansea Print Workshop, where in 2007 he was appointed for a year as a research consultant and is now a director.

General foundation tutor and part time student specialist tutor.
Richard has recently joined the Cardiff School of Art & Design as the New Head of Department for Material Arts and Foundation, and has extensive experience of working in many Educational arenas, with a primary focus in Design. His specialist areas of study include Furniture and related Product Design and Spatial Design. He has a Master of Arts from the Royal College of Art, London.
Richard has experience in developing and leading many Art & Design educational initiatives from conception through to implementation and is used to managing busy multi-disciplinary teams. Currently Material Arts and Foundation consists of strong materials focused programme areas, including Ceramics, Contemporary Textile Practice, Product Design, and the Foundation Studies in Art & Design.
His own interests lie in the product development cycle with a focus on conceptual design development, - from sketch to artefact!
Richard is currently working on a PhD proposal examining the design of learning spaces and it’s relationship to the teaching and learning experience.

Student residency in Florence
Art Foundation student Amie Lipley applied for the prestigous 'ECTARC's Leonardo da Vinci Programme' in Florence, Italy and was accepted. She will be living and working in Florence, Italy for 3 months, during this time she will keep a blog and keep in touch with her cardiff tutors and Fellow Foundation students. The time in Florence will be an invaluable experience to Amie and she will use it to inform her Foundation Studies work, it will provide a background for her Final Major Project when she returns.
