ANGELA LIZON’S COLOSSAL CATS
HOWARD GARDENS GALLERY
Cardiff School of Art & Design,
University of Wales Institute, Cardiff
Howard Gardens,
Cardiff
CF24 OSP
14th January - 10th February 2010

In 2004 Angela Lizon was part of a group exhibition at Howard Gardens Gallery, “Eight Artists from Spike Island”. At that time she was making very large colour field abstract paintings, which by virtue of their prodigious scale barely got into the gallery space . Since that time the scale has not changed but the subject matter is now unambiguously figurative and uncompromising, dealing with unforgettable imagery.
Although this will be her first solo exhibition the work is emphatic, confronting the viewing public leaving a lasting impression. More than that it deals with what might be considered kitsch subject matter, an area usually taboo to fine artists unless it falls into that now tired Post Modernist cliché irony, or the viewer is a devotee of such luminaries as Jeff Koons.
In Jonathan Clarkson’s perceptive essay in the exhibition catalogue, he looks at Angelas approach which is a great deal more subtle than might be suggested from the initial impact of these emphatic oil paintings. As he writes, “Its not about cats”…ts about painting, it always has been.”
One of her fellow artists, at Spike Island studios in Bristol, once described her paintings as “terrifying” and it is worth noting that her work was recently voted most popular exhibit in the recent Exeter Phoenix exhibition, Neither of these seemingly conflicting observations are incompatible.
Private View Thursday 14th January 2010
This exhibition continues until 10th February and is open 9 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday, 10am - 4 pm on Saturdays.
Entrance is free.
