Helen Long is a design historian who is well known for her work in the field of Victorian and Edwardian domestic architecture and interiors. She studied History of Art and History at University College London, and subsequently gained an MA from the University of East Anglia in “Nineteenth Century Architecture and Design”. She was then awarded a PhD from the University of Brighton for her thesis, The British Domestic Interior 1880-1914.
In 1993, her first book, The Edwardian House, was published by Manchester University Press, in the UK and the United States, as part of the acclaimed Studies in Design series. It has since been reprinted several times and has become the standard text on the subject. On the basis of her expertise in this field, she has been regularly invited to contribute to journals and magazines, radio and TV, and to deliver guest lectures on the subject; for example, on the V&A /RCA MA course, and in 1999 she gave the inaugural lecture at the opening of the Edwardian Room at the Geffrye Museum of Interiors, London. Her second book, The Victorian House and its Details, Architectural Press, 2002, focuses on the publications aimed at architects, builders and clients, and investigates how ideas were disseminated. Her most recent book, due to be published in 2008-9, The Victorian House, for Manchester University Press, examines the development of suburbia in the nineteenth century, concentrating on house types, exteriors and gardens, and internal design and decoration.
She was awarded a prestigious AHRB Research Award (Grade A) in 2000, and in 2004, she was made a Reader of the University of Wales.
Dr Helen Long is a member of the Centre for Fine Art Research (http://www.wirad.ac.uk/research-themes/centre-for-fine-art/), part of the Fine Art & Ceramics theme within WIRAD.
