Staff profile / Karin Hiscock
Senior Lecturer
Email:khiscock@uwic.ac.uk
Karin graduated with an M.A. in Art History from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1985 and occupied part-time posts at Bristol Polytechnic, Bath Academy of Art and North Staffs Polytechnic, and a full time temporary post at Birmingham polytechnic teaching on a range of B.A. programmes, with some M.A. supervision. She joined South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education (now UWIC) as a senior lecturer in 1989 and taught art history and theory on B.A. programmes.
She enrolled for an M.Phil in 1987 and the following year presented a paper to the Association of Art Historians on her research, subsequently publishing it the Journal of Design History. During the period of her doctoral research she undertook essays for exhibition catalogues and reviewed for Burlington Magazine. In 2006 she was awarded a Ph.D by York University, and in 2007 she changed her full time role at UWIC to a .5 post. Currently she is Programme Co-Leader of the Art & Theory Matrix, running the Art & Art History pathway.
Her research area explores the concept of the 'modern' in painting relating to abstraction and figuration, and her doctoral thesis located and analysed this problematic in British modern art in the inter-war period. The thematics which form the basis of her ongoing research and teaching are the relationship of abstraction and figuration to subjective experience; the interrelation of theory and practice; the role of history and tradition in perceptions of the ‘modern’, and place as the site of cultural memory.
Currently she is working on publications emanating from her doctoral research.
Karin Hiscock is a member of the Centre for Fine Art Research (http://www.wirad.ac.uk/research-themes/centre-for-fine-art/) part of the Fine Art and Ceramics theme within WIRAD.
