The inaugural AUCB & CSAD Undergraduate Symposium: BA (Hons) Graphic Design/ Communication, Venue: Arts University College, Bournemouth Campus, November 27 2009
The day opened with a keynote address from John L. Walters, Editor of Eye Magazine. The event was carefully conceived to give all final year graphics students from both institutions a timely opportunity to share, and reflect upon some of their wide-ranging research and academic thought – so often confined to the bound, written submission enjoyed only by examiners.
The Symposium is perhaps unusual if not unique. Research networks and conferences for undergraduate students are not commonly staged. Formal, 15 minute presentations and conference-style poster presentations today offer a rare platform on which to test-out ideas and celebrate hard won findings with a receptive, empathetic audience.
Here are some comments from BAGC students:
“A good idea and a valuable experience.”
“good to network with AUCB colleagues”
“very useful to see how people have structured their topics and shaped their arguments.”
“Enjoyable and useful.”

I have made it to the finals which consist of 8 people from England and it takes place in a theatre in London. If I can beat the 8 I go to New York to go against another 16 I think for the world title."

The Graphic Communication Agency has been launched
A new unit within the course that affords occasional opportunities for our students to work on live briefs. These are extra curricular ... the designer must juggle course work, client meetings and deadlines. It's a taste of real professional practice and not for the faint hearted, so only for volunteers!
Currently Jo Hawker (second year) is designing a range of print material for a globally renowned academic publisher of apiculture research (the science of bees) and Chris Welsby (third year) is working on a web site for a movie, games and TV director/designer, whose credits include the new Dr Who, Batman - The Dark Knight, The Wolf Man etc.

National Student Survey Results
The results are in and BA Graphic Communication continues to provide a great experience for students! You don't need to take our word for it, it's all there in the government-run 2008 UK National Student Survey. Graduating students gave particularly positive feedback about BAGC staff and the support they received.
Specifically, 100% of the cohort considered that we were highly enthusiastic about the subject and very good at explaining things. Students also rated UWIC's library resources and services very highly.
We believe the NSS results are a reflection of the pride that both staff and students have in our course.
Incidentally, the university as a whole is in the UK top 5 for intellectual climate and quality of tutor supervision - as rated by our postgraduate students in this year's Postgraduate Research Experience Survey which reviewed 72 UK universities.
