Steve Gill is a product designer with 16 years experience in industry and academia. He has designed or product managed around 50 products to market and has published 20 academic journal and conference papers. He is currently co-writing a book with Alan Dix of University of Lancaster.
He heads the Programme for Advanced Interactive Prototype Research (PAIPR) team developing new methods for the design development of information appliances such as mobile phones. PAIPR works closely with academic partners such as the University of Lancaster and those in blue chip industry such as Sony-Ericsson. PAIPR has just begun a major project investigating the nature of physical interaction and its effects on design with the help of a £335K Research Council grant.

Paul Wilgeroth is a very experienced Product Designer and Design Engineer with almost 20 years of professional practice in industry. The first 10 years of his career were spent in and Research & Development environment working on a diverse range of projects, many of which went into mass production and resulted in several successful patent applications. Projects ranged from innovative, energy-saving domestic products through to various high powered medical and industrial laser systems.
The second half of his industrial career was devoted to various design management roles that culminated as Product Design Manager of Hoover’s European Division.
He joined UWIC in 1995 initially as a senior lecturer in Industrial Design, quickly progressing to Programme Director and Director of the Centre for Design Engineering Studies. He was the principal author of the Product Design Programme of courses and as Programme Director has seen the courses grow and become recognised as amongst the top five product design programmes in the UK.
Paul has also published widely at an international level in the field of Undergraduate & Postgraduate Product Design Education. The titles of recent publications include:

Gareth Loudon is a senior lecturer in Product Design and is also Director of the Innovation Forum Ltd. (which offers training, coaching and consultancy services to help companies create new product and service strategies). Gareth has over 20 years experience in academic and industrial research and has taken several research ideas all the way through to commercial products for large companies such as Apple Computer and Ericsson.
Gareth has several patents to his name and over 35 publications. He has also won many awards including Best Software Product Award at COMDEX Asia, and for his concept design work from IDSA/BusinessWeek. Gareth graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1988 and a Ph.D. from Leicester University in 1991 and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Bethan has 8 years of academic and industrial experience. During this time she has researched and published at a number of International Conferences concerning Design Education. Bethan is a member of the PAIPR research group and to this end Bethan researches different user testing methodologies for products and the development of augmented environments that replicate the context of use.
In addition, Bethan explores 3D by producing jewellery and objects made from precious metal and ceramic. She is in the process of completing her MSc Multimedia at Swansea University and her previous qualifications include a BSc (Hons) Product Design and a PGCE for Further and Higher Education. Bethan is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Gareth Barham joined UWIC in 1999 after working in industrial design consultancy and product design marketing and manufacturing industry for companies such as IDS, The Product Group, Pathfinder-Fox and Glasdon UK Ltd. A graduate of the University of Northumbria in 1993, his work has focused on developing manufacturing efficiencies and enhancing product performance. He also identified new areas for business development as Product Development Manager for Glasdon UK Ltd.
Gareth has further developed links with the design industry bringing many ‘live’ projects and competition winners to the course. Links have been established with organisations such as Hydro Aluminium, Igloo, Tonic Studios, Linpac, Quorus, Corus and many more. Gareth has published research papers in the fields of product user interfaces and the use of CAD-CAMM in rapid product development. He is now interested in rapid prototyping methodologies for the mass production of unique products.

After graduating from Teesside Polytechnic in 1985, Roger spent 14 years in manufacturing environments in consultancy and in-house design departments at major international companies such as ITT, Alcatel, Addis Housewares and Mitsubishi Plastics. Roger has led a many successful product launches and capital investment projects that have maintained these companies as leaders in household plastics, baby, dental and teletronic markets.
In September 1998, Roger joined The University of Wales as Senior Lecturer/Commercial Coordinator. This position has enabled him to deliver design, development, management and marketing techniques to graduates and mature students, as well as continuing his ‘hands-on’ design skills through consultancy projects with a number of local SME’s and blue chip manufacturing companies.
Roger’s research interests lie in sustainable product design and design education and he has presented papers in Europe and for the IDSA in Canada.

Hailing from the North West of England, Glynn studied Automotive Design before completing postgraduate qualifications in Computer Aided Product Development and Industrial Design. He has worked in a wide variety of commercial design sectors, from Automotive to Graphic and Product, both for companies and freelance. Glynn has also been involved in delivering design education since 2002 at various Higher Education institutions across the country. This stems from a great passion for the subject that has resulted in a wide variety of design output.
Currently Glynn is Level One Tutor and Admissions Tutor. He also delivers a wide range of topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and his research is based around design education, inclusive design and the future role of design in a global market.

Brian’s industrial experience is diverse and wide which includes working in sectors such as atomic, automotive and light engineering where his role varied from tool maker to researcher.
His academic experience includes both support and teaching at comprehensive, further and higher education levels and as been the co-author of published articles in scientific journals.
Brian’s current activities are primarily involved with Computer Aided Design (CAD) and include writing a CAD help internet web site tailored to facilitate the distance learning of our industrial design students.

Peter is a graduate of the Product Design programme at UWIC. He joined the staff team in 2002 and currently fulfils the role of Studio Technician Demonstrator offering staff and student support in a wide range of design and project based activities. Peter provides a keen ‘first-point-of-contact’ for all Product Design students seeking help & advice. He is well-informed and well-connected - If he can’t help you outright, he’s bound to know someone who can!
Peter has a keen interest in all manner of art, design & craft disciplines and has a particular fondness for Computer Aided Design, Prototyping and Manufacture. He works increasingly with design students and visiting creative professionals on varying cross-disciplinary projects that utilise the Rapid Prototyping & Manufacture facilities available at UWIC Product Design to create highly unique pieces. Peter has assisted many such projects to fruition, working with students and practitioners in disciplines as diverse as Ceramics, Contemporary Textiles, Performance Art, Fine Art, Architecture and Graphic Design.
Peter’s favourite products include the Brompton folding bicycle, the ‘Eglu’ chicken house by Omlet, anything designed by Dieter Rams for Braun, the Spong Coffee Grinder and the I-phone 3G. Oh… and the Bendick’s Bittermint!
Peter was born in South Wales and adores living in Cardiff.

Emrys Lawrence is an experienced Product Designer, Design Engineer, Design Draughtsman and Model Maker with over 35 years experience in industry. The first 9 years were spent in the industrial ceramic industry working as a Design Draughtsman for Smith`s Industries Ltd and Royal Worchester Industrial Ceramics. Products designed and developed included Spark Plugs, Ceramic Insulators, Wire Drawing Dies, Cams and Shuttle Parts. This was followed by 5 years as a Work Study and Method Study Officer for Clarke`s Shoes, and a Design Draughtsman for Porth Textiles working on Blow Moulded and Injection Moulded Parts for the Christmas Decoration Industry. The next 3 years were spent at Cardiff School of Art and Design on a 3D Industrial Design Course, as a student. This was followed by a year in Industry working as a Designer at Ace Coin Equipment, which manufactured Coin Operated machines and Amusement Simulators.
The next 4 years were spent as a Technician and Lecturer at Cardiff School of Art and Design. During this period Emrys also ran a model making business with clients which included Panic Scenery, the BBC, Hill`s Industries, Rexel Ltd. and a Telecommunications Company. Emrys then returned to industry and worked as a Designer and Prototype Engineer for the following types of industries:-

Emrys has designed parts for Injection Moulding, Blow Moulding, Extrusion, Rotational Moulding, Spray Fibre Glass Production etc., Sheet Metal Fabrication including Bending, Pressing Forming and Casting, Surface Decoration including Water Transfer Process, Powder Coating, Spray Painting etc.
For the last 8 years Emrys has worked as a Technical Demonstrator/ Model Maker on the Product Design Course.
Emrys is very interested in musical instruments, to play and manufacture.

Pete Hathaway offered Kenyan residency
Product Design Technical Demonstrator Pete Hathaway has been successful in his bid for a 3-week Designer’s residency in Kenya.
As part of his proposal, he will be based in a Homeopathic health centre in Kwale district, conducting field research and leading a resident group of medical students in a series of design workshops. He will also present the results of his workshops at the week-long expo ‘Maker Faire Africa’.
His proposal will also involve working in close liaison with the UWIC African Partnership Initiative (API), as well as establishing new collaborative links between CSAD courses and partners in Africa.

Product Design project a great success
Students from CSAD's Product Design programme met with students from 8 other Universities across Europe to take part in a two week long 'Intensive Project' at Howest University in Belgium.
As a result, 8 Product Design students won 2 of the 3 available prizes.
